The beginning of the year is when gyms get swamped. Almost 50% of people I talk to and ask what their 2019 goals are, they say to lose weight and get back into shape. Unfortunately the vast majority of those people will start doing this for about 2-4 weeks and not continue. People get excited to do something but when they actually have to put in the hard work the excitement fizzles out.

A lot of people set goals and never hit them. I am not talking about just health and fitness goals. These could be financial goals, personal goals and so on. The biggest mistake people make is they are too general with their goals.

I want to lose weight and I want to get fit are way too general. You need to get more specific. Maybe it is I want to lose 10 pounds in the month of January. Or I want to lose 1-2 pounds every week. These smaller goals work towards the big goals.

When you start hitting your smaller goals you feel like you are getting somewhere. You feel accomplished.

Another thing you should be doing is writing down your goals and keeping track of them. By physically writing them down you have a much better chance of hitting them.

Lastly, tell everyone your goals! The more you people you tell the higher your chance of success. Why? One reason is that you won’t want to fail and feel embarrassed if you don’t hit them. Let’s say you told everyone you knew that you were going to lose 50 pounds this year. They see you next year and you are still the same weight. Just that alone can motivate you to smash your goals. It is good to have people to keep you accountable. You can even share each others goals and keep each other updated throughout the year on how you are doing.

Setting goals are great practice. It gives you something to strive for and work towards. If you need any ideas on some example goals you can set just let me know!
